My past heavily influences my work. Themes of isolation, resilience, subtle surrealism, the balance of humor and horror, living in America, the complexities of the human condition and my path to embracing my queerness and femininity all tie into the stories I tell while not erasing the darkness of my experience.
I am a photographer, filmmaker, and mixed media artist exploring authentic, non traditional femininity who are exhausted by the pressures of society– with a touch of subtle realism and a tone of isolation. I am inspired by confidence, vulnerability, and the refusal to perform for anyone.
I grew up between North Dakota and a farm in Colorado with a homophobic, physically and emotionally abusive dad. I leaned on fantasy and learned how to be louder than my sister to redirect his attention. My mother was an artist struggling with substances, but always nurtured my expression starting with music through painting, sculpture, and photography. I spent nearly half a decade in and out of homelessness from ages 13-18. Not unlike my mother, I too struggled with substance and alcohol abuse while navigating my gay identity through my early 30’s.
I experiment with the physical process of buying and dying flowers, sourcing and repurposing materials, transmogrifying models through makeup and costume, sketching, developing and printing film, cyanotype, gold leafing, painting.
I use my experience as a cinematographer to plan out scenes for photographs employing everything from sketches, photoshop renders, finger drawings on my phone in the middle of the night and watercolor paintings. I will shoot digital or film. Sometimes I use vintage Soviet lenses, sometimes I use modern lenses. Some of my ideas come from dreams, most come from my life in the middle of driving.
